Most people, when they describe the noise of booming ice, say it sounds like thunder, which is fitting since the cracks that produce the sound are often as jagged as lightning bolts. A few years ago I stood on a frozen lake at dusk, when the air temperature was falling and the ice was beginning to grumble. There was a sudden sharp retort and the ice cracked in an erratic black line that traveled half a mile in a heartbeat and passed between my feet. I saw it coming: a zigzagging bolt of horizontal lightning that passed so quickly beneath me I could not react. If I had been sitting on a horse it would have been shot out from under me. I looked down and the ice on each side of the crack rocked lightly with my weight. A thin bulge of water seeped through the fissure, spread out, and froze.
